What is All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC)

All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), founded on 31 October 1920, is the oldest central trade union in India. Trade unions have been emerging in India since 1918. AITUC was established as their central body. There was a need for a central body to elect Indian workers’ representatives to the annual conference of the International Labor Organization in Geneva. The AITUC, modeled on Britain’s Trade Union Congress, filled that gap.

Objective

Its objectives were to co-operate with all the trade unions in the country, to coordinate the operations of the various unions, to guide the AITUC-affiliated trade unions and to build a united movement for the demands of the workers.

History

From the very beginning, AITUC pursued the economic, social and political interests of the workers. Lala Lajpat Rai, the first president of AITUC, CR Das, Sarojini Naidu, Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhash Chandra Bose, etc. also held the post.

Initially, there was a cordial relationship between AITUC and the National Congress. After 1930, however, the relationship deteriorated. Earlier, the first faction had fallen in AITUC. After 1947, there was no one left in this organization except the Communists. AITUC is headquartered in New Delhi.

The Council of Representatives of AITUC affiliated teams meets from time to time. It sets the policy of AITUC and selects the office bearers and an ordinary board. Apart from this there is an executive board. AITUC has branches in every state of India. AITUC has formed federations for textile, jute, mining and other industries. AITUC is affiliated with the International Federation of Trade Unions, the World Federation of Trade Unions.

AITUC publishes a fortnightly trade union record. At the end of 1971, 3,018 trade unions were affiliated with AITUC and the number of members was 18,72,982. AITUC ranks second among the central trade unions in the country after AITUC.
